1. What is your position in Masthead Studios?I'm the Lead Game Designer for Earthrise, which covers everything from initial game design to the supervision and management of the game design and writers within the company. I also ensure that all of the game's content falls within our set standards for quality and rewarding gameplay. 2. How long have you played computer games?"I have been playing games since the good old Apple II days in 1984. My gaming life started with countless nights playing Snake, Paratrooper and Lode Runner, but my first memorable acquaintance with the roleplaying genre was thanks to the venerable Ultima series. This was the first time I felt like I knew what I wanted to do for a living." 3. How does a normal work day go for you at Masthead Studios?Every day at Masthead Studios is a challenge of its own kind, but that's what makes it exciting. A normal day is spent managing the integrity of the game design document, incorporating new, tested ideas and material, and brainstorm meetings with the design team to discuss the latest rules or additions to the game world. Constant communication with the art team ensures that the vision of the game stays cohesive. When I can take a break from the guts of the gameplay and content design, I work on responding to interviews from various media and gaming websites. 4. What are your favorite games/genres? Obviously roleplaying games are among my favorites, but traditional adventure games and casual games are also great pastimes. My favorite games are Ultima and The Elder Scrolls series in terms of scale and complexity for their time, AD&D Gold Box games, Baldur's Gate and Planescape for doing D&D right, and Fallout and Final Fantasy for their state-of-the-art storytelling. MMORPGs are probably the pinnacle of the roleplaying genre in terms of complexity and grandeur, but it is very hard for me to pick one that answers all my prayers at once. If I had to pick an afterlife though, I'd rather be a spaceship in Eve Online. 5. What do you do in your spare time when you aren't working on Earthrise? My free time is sparse, but sometimes less is more! I spend my evenings in the gym or on the Internet on various game design discussion boards gathering news and rumor scoops to keep my gaming knowledge up-to-date. Games remain prevalent even in my spare time, as I enjoy playing roleplaying games when I'm not working.
